ak’s approach to knitting

As a traditional textile technique, hand-knitting has always been of interest to ak’ and an important part of our product range. Of course as anyone who reads magazines or newspapers knows, knitting is now hot – ‘the new Zen’. Not only have fashion designers rediscovered the textural beauty and versatility of hand-knitted textiles but women (predominantly) of all ages and from all walks of life are experiencing the joy of working with one’s brain and hands to produce their own individually conceived garments and accessories.
Our particular approach to knitting may be summed up in the following points:
1. We believe in using natural fibres – and using the most appropriate, best quality yarn possible for a project. Hand knitting is no longer driven by the desire to save money – hand knits take time and lots of effort and they last – choosing cheap wool is false economy and will only prove disappointing.
2. We aim to abolish the tyranny of the written pattern and give knitters the confidence to think outside the square by equipping them with a good grasp of how knitting really works at a technique level. Flowing from this understanding comes the ability to adapt patterns, create your own, change yarn and ensure a correct fit.
workshops
if all this sounds a little pompous and far too serious, it’s not intentional. One of the best features of knitting is that it is extremely sociable and great fun. Knitting workshops at ‘ak’ provide good company, lots of chat and laughter as well as a chance to learn something new or add to your skill base.

ak is not a wool shop per se – we stock a tight, selective range of yarns which we feel represent excellent quality, aesthetic appeal and good value. We also source and stock vintage buttons as well as a complete range of knitting needles, and accessories.
