Dinara’s story is a tradition that continues to evolve... While Dinara and Ben continue to be central to the ak story, our family of 45 cm felt dolls now has links beyond central Asia. Rosie for example, was originally conceived for Ford Barton in Devon in the UK, producers of wonderful organically grown Wensleydale wool. Working with Ford Barton yarn was fundamental to the creation of a personality and style consistent with English country tradition . It also alerted us to the need to develop an Australian doll featuring clothing made from our own high quality wool. The timing couldn’t have been better – Imogen was ‘born’ naturally and named after a very special little girl in my life. And because she hails from a family of keen gardeners as well as from Melbourne, it seemed entirely appropriate to dub her ‘a garden girl’. Finally the latest editions to our extended family are Ella and Miles, named after two jazz greats. Their own story is still evolving but based on their colourful and decorative clothes it should prove interesting. Each classic ak doll is handmade by artisans in central Asia and wears an individually hand finished outfit.
ak’s original felt doll wears a colourful print dress and a felt pinafore.
Ben, Dinara’s young brother favours a traditional Kyrgyz hat.
Dressed in her colourful and distinctive hand–knits and felt, dinara’s ready for winter.
Ben is dressed for the week–end in cords and hand knits.
Dressed for a casual weekend in appliqued jeans, stylish jumper and hat, Imogen always carries a jacket and umbrella, just in case.
An English country girl, her favourite outfit combines a checked woolen skirt and hand knitted, embroidered twin-set.
Ella just loves clothes, particularly hats in vibrant crazy colours. Her favourite stacked hat works perfectly with embroidered pants and a hand-knitted coat.
Miles is quite literally a ‘mad hatter’. He adores hats – the crazier and more colourful the better.
All ak dolls believe that jeans and a white t–shirt are wardrobe basics
ak’s very special flower is so stylish she even has a removable winged jacket
