ak was never intended to be an exclusively child-centric concept – in fact our earliest felt collectibles were designed to be modern classics rather the latest fad at this seasons trade fair. This philosophy continues to shape the development of all new designs and pleasingly most of our original products have proved to have genuine and enduring cross-generational appeal.

In creating ak felt toys and collectibles we draw inspiration from the animals and iconography of folklore, legend and literature – in particular culturally significant animals that are celebrated within in the textile traditions of various cultures. As a consequence, ak designs tend to feature traditional animals like horses, goats, rams, camels and elephants who have symbolic meaning within the cultures of central and S.E. Asia. When you purchase an ak toy or room piece it will come with a card explaining the origins and inspiration for the design.

We often re-work traditional concepts in ways that are relevant to contemporary life. For example, each ak felt growth tree is slightly different and therefore unique but also a modern decorative statement that it will become a treasured keepsake of childhood.

This artisan quality collection is sewn by hand using handmade and dyed felt. Many details are hand embroidered and appliquéd meaning we make limited numbers. At times dyelots differ and at others designs are retired because it is no longer possible to make them as they were originally conceived.
